Roxy Mary-Kate is the free spirit and aspiring rock star who wants to cut school to go to the filming of a music video so she can hand out copies of her CD to recording industry executives. But first they have to deal with being thrown off the train, being chased by a hitman who has hidden a valuable computer chip in Roxy's purse, losing Jane's speech, meeting up with two very cute guys, and many changes of costume.
Continue reading Show less Is it any good? The plot is pretty standard bonding-through-adversity stuff, including a literal "my dog ate it" plot twist in the next movie, I'll bet the butler did it. There are a couple of funny moments, mostly those involving either slapstick comedy or SCTV vets Eugene Levy as the truant officer stalking the biggest catch of all -- Roxy and Andrea Martin as a dog-loving Senator.
It's good to see New York City playing itself, instead of Toronto acting as understudy. Jack Osborne and a man from the Olsens' past make brief appearances and Dr. Drew Pinsky brings the same dignified kindness to the role of the girls' father that he does to his popular radio call-in show about sex. Also, when they fall into the Dumpster, the dog is fake; but when the girls pop up out of the trash bin and "Renaldo" moves along the top, the dog is real. A trainer hid inside the empty Dumpster, which had a little ledge built into it that the dog could rest its hind legs on and walk.
Another trainer stood behind the cameraman using hand signals to get the dog to walk in the right direction. Roxy, Jane and "Renaldo" go in for a makeover at a beauty shop. One of the stylists dances with "Renaldo", who hops along the floor on two legs while wearing a red hair piece. The production explained that the costume was specially made for the dog and a trainer stood off camera using a combination of verbal cues and hand signals to achieve the desired action.
In the beginning of the film, a large boa constrictor crawls into the shower while Jane is inside. Then Jane steps outside of the shower and looks a bit shaken while Roxy stands nearby with the snake wrapped around her shoulders. The production told American Humane that this scene was done in two separate shots. They are forced to take Reinaldo with them. They make their way to their destinations and decide to part ways.
Roxy heads to the Simple Plan video shoot being followed by Max, while Jane goes to meet Bennie for an exchange. When he finds out the dog, Reinaldo, has swallowed the chip, he tries to attack Jane who flees from the car and goes to find Roxy. While running from Max and Bennie, the two end up on stage with the band and crowd surf to get away.
Trey is also trying to find Roxy who runs into Bennie and gets kidnapped in the trunk of his car. Meanwhile, Jane and Roxy end up in the underground sewer with Reinaldo with Jane's speech in less than two hours. Max hunts them down and they escape in a cab even when Jane failed her driving test.
They accidentally pick up the same man that Roxy spilled her drink on in the train. When they stop, they argue. Jane explains that Roxy has never been there for her and never takes life seriously, and she feels she stopped taking responsibility for anything after their mother died, leaving Jane in charge.
Our rep on set talked to the animal trainers and discussed how the fake dog would be substituted in the above scenes. And if we're lucky sometimes there's a miracle at the end of that wrong turn. They know how to look pretty when they have to try on a montage of outlandish outfits bursting with bling-bling.
